Jean-Frédéric Bazille (December 6, 1841 - November 28, 1870) was an impressionist painter and soldier best known for his depiction of figures.
Born in Montpellier, Hérault, France, into a middle-class Protestant
family, Bazille began studying medicine in 1862 when he met
Pierre-Auguste Renoir and was drawn to impressionist painting.
His friends included Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley and Édouard Manet.
Born to a wealthy family, Bazille helped support some of these artists
by giving them space in his studio and materials to use. Frédéric
Bazille's career was cut short when he was killed in action in
Beaune-la-Rolande, Loiret during the Franco-Prussian War (1870/71).
